The paper's byline was "Local and national news "you won't read anywhere else."" Local news in the library's run of The Alternative includes the following:
- May 15, 1993 issue: interview with white supremacist Tom Metzger, dismissal of UCSD student lawsuit regarding annual renewal of storefront space assignments to student coops, Congressman Duncan Hunter (editorial), Interview with San Diego Mayor Susan Golding regarding environment and business
- July 30, 1993 issue: interview with C.T. Weber one of the founders of the Peace & Freedom Party
- November 1993 issue: Monty Reed Kroopkin (local Wobbly, journalist, graphic artist, paralegal worker), school uniforms, biased religion being taught at El Cajon publc school
National news in the library's run of The Alternative includes a Texas border hunger strike and "Friendshippers," antiwar and anticolonialsm, series on Latin American nations among others.

Conditions Governing Access
The collection is open for research. Access to fragile originals is restricted when access copies are available. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
