Scope and Contents

Library holdings are one issue, undated, labeled "orientation issue." The issue was likely printed in 1968 or 1969, and was focused on leftist messaging. Articles are as follows: "Union Incites Threat" [regarding publishing of the San Diego Union article "This Is an Order!" which demanded an investigation of UCSD philosophy professor Herbert Marcuse, which led to a series of threats against Marcuse]; "The Fall this Summer" [extending academic freedom through the summer]; "TNC Raps Racists" [Tuesday the Ninth Committee, organized on the Tuesday following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.]; "Admin & Faculty Bow To Threats" [university response to Marcuse threats]; "Why Draft Wants You" [student deferments and the draft, resistance]; "Berkeley Citizens Demand Self-Government" [riot in Berkeley, California]

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Access to fragile originals is restricted when access copies are available. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Biographical / Historical

The indicator was a UCSD student newspaper, begun in 1966. It was published until at least 1970. A second imprint created by UCSD, titled the New Indicator, began publication ca. 1976.
