"Fathers and sons cooperate on project", 1970-08-25
Scope and Contents
"Work and fun were combined last weekend at the Palomar Family YMCA when members of the Y Indian Guides enjoyed one of three campouts and worked on the Y's Indian Village at the rear of the Y. Fathers and sons who volunteered labor on seating for an amphitheater around a permanent campfire ring, are (from left) Irving Vaughan, Frank Brockel Jr., Gene Gray, Dee Nolan, Frank Brockel and Daryl Quandt." [Similar images in envelope as well as people by "Y Indian Guide" signage. Y Indian Guides was a program created by Joe Friday (Temagami) of Ontario, Canada, and Harold Keltner of the St. Louis YMCA in the 1920s. The program was intended to help fathers (and later parents) form bonds with their sons (and later children of any gender). However, it often problematically consisted of cartoonishly stereotyped cultural appropriation of Native American culture to facilitate the bonding exercises. The Y Indian Guide program was rebranded into YMCA Adventure Guides in 2003.]
