Scope and Contents

2 folders with materials relating to the Tukwut on CSUSM's campus. Materials include various emails between Biggs and CSUSM faculty and staff regarding the Tukwut name and its controversy (changing CSUSM's mascot/colors). Biggs was also in contact with Roy Lee, the ASI President, in 2006, regarding the history of the Tukwut mascot cotroversy, in addition to discussing the early stages of naming CSUSM's courtyard after the Tukwut. There are emails and official letters of correspondence sent to the San Diego Union Tribune in the folder regarding journalist Logan Jenkins' insensitive articles about Tukwut. There is also an official statement written by President Gonzalez about the Jenkins' articles. Additionally, there is an email exchange between Biggs and Jenkins regarding his reporting on the Tukwut. File also contains a few policies, such as the "California State University San Marcos Graphic Standards, 2000” and the "Communications and Marketing Policy," September 24, 2001. File also contains various reports, including, the President’s Council meeting minutes, November 25, 2002; the ASI Board of Directors Meeting Agendas, 07-02; the ASI VP of Finance Officer Report, September 29, 2006; the Roy Lee, President Report, ASI, September 29, 2006; the Officer Report, Executive VP, Adira Mashburn; and the ASI, Vice-President for External Affairs Report, Jeremy Mills, September 27, 2009. File also contains many documents relating to Tukwut history, such as Biggs' original personal notes on the Tukwut, and her handwritten notes regarding the Tukwut, its spelling, and and other Luiseño translations for CSUSM related names, such as “San Marcos,” “Whitney Mountain,” and “Twin Oaks.” File also includes her handwritten notes on tribal names. There are also two different verions of a document called, "The History of the Tukwut at CSUSM" (no author, n.d). Biggs also wrote two different documents about the history of the Tukwut: "The History of Tukwut at Cal State San Marcos” by Bonnie Biggs, June 10, 2004, and “The History of Tuwkut at Cal State San Marcos” by Bonnie Biggs, presented to President’s Council, November 25, 2002. File also includes documents that include input on the Tukwut controversy from the Indigenous communuty, such as “Input gathered from Luiseño people on tukwut & Cal State San Marcos issue Educational Equity Task Force meeting April 26, 2006, Submitted by Bonnie Biggs”, and “Input from Luiseno people re: tukwut issue—April 25-26, 2006.” File includes copied excerpts from books and articles on Luiseño language and vocabulary. Finally, File contains miscellanous documents, such as contact information for members of the San Diego tribal communities, and a Memorandum from President Dr. Alexander Gonzalez regarding the University Image Task Force and updates and recommendations from their recent meetings (including voting for campus mascot) (Oct 14, 1997).

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
