Pala interns -- former: Sarah Way, 1996 - 1997

 File — Box: 1
Identifier: SC045 01/19

Scope and Contents

Folder contains materials relating to intern Sarah Way who was a student of SJSU's School of Library and Information Science and enrolled in an internship for LIBR 294 course. She interned at both Pala and Rincon libraries. During the course of her internship, Way loaded InMagic software for the Pala Reservation Library and helped develop guidelines for cataloging materials in the collections of both Pala and Rincon. She also entered materials in databases; trained staff in all functions of the database; and developed a manual for use by tribal staff after her internship concluded. It should also be noted that Way and Kim Laru collaborated together during the course of their internships. Folder contains email correspondences between Biggs and Way regarding the internship onboarding process and updates regarding project statuses at both libraries. There are also email correspondences regarding some controversies, such as Rincon closing their casino, shutting down Rincon Tribal Hall, and laying off 70 people. Way also shares a heated discussion she overheard at Pala about some individuals who were unhappy about how Pala's council had been operating, how money had been handled, and how a tribal member was treated at the casino due to racialized issues. Folder also contains Way's final project for her internship course: “Tribal Libraries Project: Internship at Pala and Rincon, Journal of Sarah Way, LIBR 294, Summer 1996” by Sarah Way. Her business card from National University and presumably a photograph of Way can be found in the booklet. Folder also includes miscellaneous documents, such as an Intern Evaluation Form prepared by Biggs for from SJSU School of Library and Information Science interns (for when Way was assigned to Pala and Rincon Indian reservation libraries, Summer 1996); SJSU's “For Practicum/Internship/Special Studies (prepared by Biggs); and “Rincon Tribal Library, InMagic entry form for Library Catalog, May 1996.”
