Scope and Contents

File consists of two folders of materials relating to the Tukwut Courtyard statue and ceremony, including:

  • Email correspondence between Biggs and CSUSM faculty regarding the building of the Tukwut statue; between Biggs and Rick Keith (Vice President, University Advancement) regarding moving forward with getting quotes and details from the two artists who had sent in proposals for the Tukwut courtyard statue; between Biggs and Marti Gray (Administrator Emeritus, CSUSM Foundation) regarding a Tukwut statue proposal that had been submitted to their office and lack of installation pricing listed in the proposal; between Biggs to the former Pauma chairman Chris Devers, inviting him to speak at the ceremony; between Biggs, Roy Lee (President & CEO of ASI), and Karen Haynes regarding the Tukwut Community Charter Code and presenting it at the next Native Advisory Council meeting.
  • Letter from Biggs to Johnny Bear Contreras encouraging him to submit a proposal for consideration the Tukwut Courtyard. Letter from Rick D. Keith to Biggs, thanking her for her donation of $1,000 towards the Tukwut Courtyard.
  • Proposal, with sketch, submitted by Johnny Bear Contreras.
  • Materials relating to the Tukwut Coutyard and ceremony, such as a draft of the “Tukwut Courtyard Dedication” speech prepared by Biggs for the event. Draft includes handwritten notes by Biggs.
  • Speeches: "Speech for Tukwut Courtyard Dedication"; “The History of Tukwut at Cal State San Marcos” by Bonnie Biggs, presented to President’s Council ( November 25, 2002).
  • “Resolution in Support of the Tukwut as a Campus Symbol," published by by the CSUSM Associated Students, Inc.
  • Flyers promoting the event, such as the “Tukwut Is Back” flyer; and the “Naming & Blessing of the Tukwut Coutyard” flyer.
  • Materials related to the artists who submitted proposals for the courtyard statue, such as Robert Freeman's artist bio; and Johnny Bear Conteras' artist pamphlet, and an article printed out from the Kumeyaay Nation’s website titled, “Local artist to open installation with cultural symbolism,” about Johnny Bear Contreras’s artistic career.
  • Memo from the CSUSM Native Advisory Council and the American Indian Student Alliance, inviting the CSUSM community for the Tukwut Courtyard ceremony on March 1, 2007. The memo includes short history of Tukwut and pronunciation of the name.

Soto, The San Diego Union Tribue, March 2, 2007; "Code 601: Tukwut Community Code"; “Tukwut Courtyard Dedication” flyer; one newspaper clipping and 2 photocopies of the clipping of “The Mountain Lion: Sculpture dedication,” photographed by Waldo Nilo (no newspaper name, no date, though Nilo worked for the North County Times Newspaper at one point); and the last page of an article about CSUSM, without the inclusion of first page from The North County Times, February 28, 2007, about building the new parking garages on campuses..

A poster of the State commemorative California Indian Seal by Robert Freeman (Luiseño/Hukpapa Sioux) was removed from the folder for flat storage.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
