Scope and Contents

"Robert L. Fisk, who runs a Poway meat market, accepts a California Highway Patrol community service award from Capt. W. B. Terry for saving a man from drowning, at the risk of his own safety, last June 20. Fisk was mainly responsible for righting a car which overturned in a drainage ditch with three feet of water and pulling the driver to safety. He was aided by a sheriff's deputy who happened by." 'Fred' Joplin is the man who constructed the smallest steam engine in the world, according to Ripley's 'Believe It or Not.' Now Joplin is working on another lilliputian engine. He is shown with its parts." [Similar images in envelope, as well as additional images related to 1970-09-24 article with photography by Herb Pasik with following caption for the published image:] "A new classroom wing at Poway High School furnishes facilities for large and small group instruction in math, allowing the innovative program at the school to have proper facilities for the first time. An art and science wing, now under construction, will provide even more tailored facilities for those subjects. Pictured in the individual study and teacher office and conference room in the new wing, which was financed entirely by federal funds are (from left) David Rightmer, math teacher, with Debbie Fileman; and Dan Thompson, principal, with Bob McCullough and Ivan Gayler working with a calculating machine."

Conditions Governing Access

The Dan Rios papers are currently undergoing processing and are open for research. The department has internal documentation over what is in individual envelopes and can search for people, places, and events from 1968 - 2001 in advance of any visits so that we can ensure we have materials on hand for researchers. Please contact Special Collections in advance to request access.

The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. From the Collection: 222.31 Linear Feet (186 containers totaling 195 boxes and drawers of various sizes, roughly sized like postcard boxes. Metal containers house 2 or 3 drawers each.)
