Scope and Contents

File consists of six folders related to Bigg's work with the American Indian Library Association (AILA).

Folders 04/07, 04/08, and 04/09, "AILA-Presidency 1998-1999" contain materials related to Biggs's time as AILA President from 1998 to 1999. Folder contains various emails, including but not limited to topics relating to newsletter content; scholarships; committee assignments and statuses; applying for tax exempt status; and conference and budget planning. Folder also contains business meeting notes and agendas from the ALA and the OLOS Subcommittee on Library Servies to American Indians. Folder also contains booklets from the Grants Library Initiative and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, since there are also emails in the folder discussing applying to the California Gates Library Foundation.

Folder 04/10, "AILA Activity" contains miscellanous materials relating to AILA activity. Folder contains emails between Biggs, Dr. Lotsee Patterson, and others regarding AILA personnel matters and other activities, grant projects, and conferences. Additionally, there are various emails between Biggs, Patterson, and Mary Alice regarding Biggs' visiting the University of New Mexico for access to Patterson's archives in order to write Biggs' "Bright Child" article. Folder also includes Biggs' "Bright Child" notes, as well as a copy of the “California State University San Marcos Policy on Difference in Pay Leave.”

Folder 04/11, "AILA Misc." contains materials relating to the AILA and state library business. Folder contains emails relating to various topics, including but not limited to controversies involving AILA board members; the publication of the “National Commission on Libraries and Information Science” article by Miriam A Drake; planning AILA budgets; and answering student emails regarding tribal library issues. Folder also contains Joan Howland’s letter to Victor L. Schill, President of the AILA, nominating Dr. Lotsee Patterson for inaugural recipient of the AILA “Honoring Our Elders” Distinguished Service Award. Folder also contains other materials, such as proofs of Biggs's "Bright Child" article, and the “National Indian Education Association Library Project: Appendices,” created by the Bureau of Field Studies And Surveys, University of Minnesota. Folder also includes "Shy Librarian: Promoting Libraries, Librarians, and Books," Vol. 3, No. 1, Spring 2003; American Libraries, Vol. 33, no. 7, August 2022 (p. 78 mentions Patterson).

Folder 04/12, "AILA Misc: photographs" contains 22 photographs, most taken from an unknown conference.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
