"Getting ready to serve a barbecue to about 1,000 persons at St. Michael's Church in Poway Sunday are (from left) Robert Beaudoin, Father Michael Coughlan, Lanny Lancaster and Henry Robideau. Barbecue dinner will be served from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. to celebrate groundbreaking for a new church sanctuary for the Poway-Rancho Bernardo Catholic parish. Men stand on site of church, north of parochial school building where services are held." Similar images in envelope, as well as additional images related to 1970-09-18 article by Kathlyn Russell with following caption for the published image: "Val Mattiasdottir, an American Field Service student from Iceland, shows a native dress to Tracy Hathaway of Poway. Miss Mattiasdottir, who is residing with the William Hathaway family, bought the dress for her trip and confesses it is the first one she has ever had. Some people wear them for national holidays, she said."

Conditions Governing Access
The Dan Rios papers are currently undergoing processing and are open for research. The department has internal documentation over what is in individual envelopes and can search for people, places, and events from 1968 - 2001 in advance of any visits so that we can ensure we have materials on hand for researchers. Please contact Special Collections in advance to request access.
