Scope and Contents
Library holdings consist of eight issues. Contents of newspaper include articles covering LGBTQ advocacy, liberation, issues, and lifestyle, both national and local to Southern California and San Diego in scope. Majority of content focused on gay men in library holdings, with some coverage of other communities and larger LGBTQIA community.

Conditions Governing Access
The collection is open for research. Access to fragile originals is restricted when access copies are available. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Biographical / Historical
The San Diego Update was a newspaper that ran from 1979 until 2006. It was a biweekly newspaper circulated free to its readers and distributed to San Diego, Laguna Beach, Long Beach, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, Denver, Reno, Tucson, and Phoenix. Publishers were Howard Rouse and Don Hauck.
