"Hayden stresses economic system", 1976-02-02
Scope and Contents
"Tom Hayden gestures in Escondido appearance; Tom Hayden, former antiwar activist and "Chicago Seven" defendant..., appearing less fearsome than his protest image of the 1960s. He asked for a chance to bring his brand of activism to the U.S. Senate to fight for what he termed economic democracy. The coffee-and-cookies crowd of 170, mostly Democrats, who showed up on Saturday night to pack the auditorium at Lincoln School, were more than polite. They gave the 35 – year – old candidate several vollies of applause, laughed with him as many times and would have kept him to speak longer. It was more of a rap session than a speech, though still far short of a protest rally."
