"All that smoke observed by Douglas Schmite in front of the Escondido Village Mall on Valley Parkway seemed to be coming from a vehicle fire, but it actually was a truck performing pavement rejuvination work as part of a $25,000 street project by the city between Ash Street and Midway Drive." "John Hook makes his way along a steel beam in the rapidly rising structure on Grand Avenue and Escondido Boulevard that is the future home of Palomar Savings and Loan Association. The building is being constructed by Kitchell Contractors, Inc., of San Diego. Project superintendent is Norman W. Newman.
