Scope Note: 670 __ |a Garnel, D. The Rise of Teamster Power in the West, 1972 |b (International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT); in 1903, Samuel Gompers, pres. of the AFL, assembled a steering committee in order to resolve the conflict between the Team Drivers’ International Union (TDIU) and the Teamsters’ National Union of America (TNU); at Niagara Falls the two groups merged and formed the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT); the reelection of Cornelius P. Shea at the 1906 IBT convention precipitated secession by locals in Chicago, St. Louis, New York and elsewhere, many of whom joined together to form a rival organization, the United Teamsters of America (UTA); in 1908 the UTA started to collapse, with many units reaffiliating with the IBT; however, 17 teamster locals in Chicago joined together to form the Teamsters’ and Helpers Union of Chicago and Vicinity, which remained independent until 1934, when most reaffiliated with IBT)
