The Indian Place Names of Rancho Cuyamaca
Scope and Contents
The Table of Contents lists fifteen place names of Rancho Cuyamaca, a region of eastern San Diego County. While the Kumeyaay people are the original inhabitants of the Cuyamaca region of San Diego County, California. the Kumeyaay tribe is not mentioned by name in the authors' forward or introduction of the manuscript. The authors do refer to "legends handed down from generation to generation by tribal song-makers and stroytellers" and the legends have been "preserved for all time by a few writers privileged to know the last of the legend bearers of the Cuyamaca.
The Table of Contents lists fifteen place names/events, which inlcude place names and locations and interesting bits of information on customs, history, and forklore. Place names include: 1. Cuyamaca, the Pervading Indian Name; 2. Cuyamaca Rancherias, Summer Camps of the Indians; 3. Ah-haKwu-ah-mac, the Rancheria of Cuyamaca; 4. The Battle of Cuyamaca; 5. An Ancient Landmark; 6. Historic Igusi [Yguai]; 7. The Lasting Spring, Anaja; 8. Jual-eu-ouilah, the Tough Strong One; 9. The Arrow Makers' Camp; 10. Sin-you-wa-ra "Woman like the Young Leaf in the Spring;" 11. The "Crooked Land" of Mitaraguibe becomes the Canada Verde, or Green Valley; 12. Pam-mun Am-Wuh and its Mythical Mountain; 13. Mesa de Haucupin and the Five Mesitas; 14. Jamatayune, Place of the Famous Feasts; and 15. The Great Chief's Wigwam, Na-wa Ti e. The manuscript includes references (Appendix 1) and a biblography Appendix 2). A final appendix, with some handwriting in black) includes a list of place names that appertain to the entire cultural area of the Cuyamaca Indians. Names noted with one asterisk are localities within the the boundaries of the original grant but not within the limits of the park. Names noted with two askterisks are localities outside the park and grant but within the Cuyamaca cultural area.
Author H.E. Rensch also wrote "Historic Spots in California" in three volumes. The first volume, The Southern Counties, was written by H.E. and E.G. Rensch.
